New book! “You Don’t Have To Have a Dream”

Ooh look! I did a book!

You Don’t Have To Have a Dream (Advice For The Incrementally Ambitious)” is a gorgeously-bound collection of the 3 Occasional Addresses I’ve made at Universities that have given me Floppyhat Funtimes.

I’ve written some additional ponderous intros and I’m recording the audio book version and I’m going to sign a heap of the hard copies. Gorgeous illustrations by Andrew Rae and designed by Dave Brown.

Out in September in the UK and Australia. (US next year, sorry!) Pre-order available now here.

Stoked about this project. Xxx

Groundhog Day the Musical, Melbourne!

A stellar cast has been announced for the award-winning and record-breaking Groundhog Day The Musical which will have its Australian premiere in Melbourne early next year.

Direct from its record-breaking return season at London’s Old Vic, Groundhog Day The Musical will play exclusively at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre, for a strictly limited season from January 24th, 2024. Must close April 20th 2024!

Andy Karl, will reprise his role as Phil Connors, the cynical TV weatherman. He played Phil in the original London production, for which he won the Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical, reprising his role in the Broadway production where he was Tony Nominated for Best Actor in a Musical, and he played Phil again in London for Groundhog Day’s record-breaking return season at the Old Vic this year.

Opposite Andy Karl, playing the quick-witted and kind-hearted television producer Rita Hanson, is Helpmann award-winning performer Elise McCann who played Miss Honey in Matilda in the Australian production.

Full details of the 22 strong cast can be found here or viewed on the second video below.

Tim: “I cannot wait to get down to Melbourne to meet our Groundhog Day The Musical cast. I’m especially excited by the news that Andy Karl will be joining the rest of the Australian cast, who are a brilliant bunch of people. Andy played Phil Connors in the original London production, for which he won an Olivier Award and then on Broadway for which he was Tony Nominated. Ever since the first iteration of Groundhog Day The Musical I’ve been convinced that Australia will love the mix of darkness and light, of head and heart, and complexity and joy in the production.”

Tickets available here and brand new tickets will go on sale on Thursday!.

‘White Wine in the Sun’ – proceeds from all sales over the Christmas period go to Aspect again this year!

This video is the latest version of the song, from Tim’s special, BACK, which was filmed at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire in 2021 and released last year. There’s a YouTube Playlist here with two other versions from 2009 and 2017.

As many of you will already know, every year, all proceeds from the sale of (either version of) Tim’s sentimental Christmas song White Wine In The Sun during the months of November, December and January, go to an organisation which supports children and adults on the autism spectrum. Once again, that will be Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect).

If you already have the song, you might like to gift it via iTunes or donate directly here or to a similar charity in your own country.

There are two versions; the 2009 solo version and the 2012 studio version, with strings, french horn and more.

Here are a few more places you can download the 2012 single internationally: iTunes, Amazon (UK), Amazon (US) .

Groundhog Day returns to The Old Vic in 2023!

Groundhog Day the critically acclaimed hit musical is making its long clamoured for return to London’s Old Vic theatre next year.

The show will run from May 20th to August 12th* 2023, with a press night on June 8th. There will be an audio described performance on July 7th and a captioned show on July 20th.

Update: Extended to run until August 19th 2023.

Tickets

Directed by Matthew Warchus, artistic director of the Old Vic, with the book by Danny Rubin, and music and lyrics by Tim.

The original London production was nominated for eight Olivier Awards, winning Best New Musical and Best Actor in a Leading Role in Musical for Andy Karl who will be reprising his role as Phil Connors, the cynical Pittsburgh TV weatherman.
Further casting is still to be announced.

Tim: “Creating this musical was hugely challenging and enormously fun. Working with the wondrous Danny Rubin and the brilliant Matthew Warchus, alongside Chris Nightingale – music supervisor and orchestrator extraordinaire – we wrestled this iconic existential comedy drama into a completely new work; something that not only found critical acclaim, but also seemed to affect its audiences in a way I’ve not witnessed. It was dense with laughs, crowded with big ideas, wildly ambitious and profoundly emotional. Seeing it come back to The Old Vic, perhaps my favourite theatre on the planet, is a huge thrill.”

Matthew Warchus: “Groundhog Day is one of my all-time favourite films and making the musical stage adaptation with Danny Rubin and Tim Minchin was one of the happiest creative experiences of my life. With echoes of classics such as The Music Man and It’s A Wonderful Life, the Groundhog Day film manages to be both a great screwball comedy-romance and also a profound life-lesson combined… adding up to, in my view, the perfect entertainment. Our musical adaptation aims to build on those dual attributes and unlock – in comic, theatrical form – a potent and uplifting message for us all: ‘The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new lands but in having new eyes’ (Marcel Proust).”
